Have you ever made your own croutons?
When I was a kid, my Nana and I loved going to the local diner for a hot cup of split pea soup with homemade croutons. And while I do love a good split pea soup, the croutons were 100% my favorite part of the meal.
I can actually remember the first time I tried them. They were flavorful and warm and delightfully crispy and almost melted in your mouth. This was magic.
My Nana told me the reason these croutons were so awesome is because they were homemade. Up until this point, I had only ever enjoyed croutons from a box, so I remember being totally enamored with the idea that someone made these croutons FROM SCRATCH.
Fast-forward to today: I make my own homemade croutons all. the. damn. time. This is partly because boxed croutons that don’t contain some kind of sneaky dairy can be hard to find. But they’re also just so delicious AND easy to make! And without a doubt, these easy air-fried croutons are our favorite way to do it.
Little kid me would be so proud. 🙂

How to Make Air-Fried Croutons
The recipe for these air-fried croutons could not be easier to make. But OMG, the flavor and texture you’ll experience will make allllll the difference.
First, you’ll cube your bread. We’re not looking for fancy bread here. A loaf of cheap sandwich bread on its last leg will do just fine.
Next, you’ll toss those bread cubes in a little olive oil and spices. I like to do this in a big Tupperware container with a lid, so I can shake ’em and coat them evenly.
And finally, you’ll throw ’em in your air fryer basket and cook ’til they’re crisp + golden and just too perfect for words. I mean, why not make homemade croutons when they’re THIS easy, right?!

Air-Fried Croutons
Ingredients
- 6 slices whole wheat bread see notes for gluten free, cubed
- 2 Tbsp olive oil see notes for oil free**
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp sea salt
Instructions
- Add your cubed bread to a large bowl or container (I like to use something with a lid). Carefully drizzle on the olive oil and add the spices. Toss with your hands, or if you're using a container with a lid, put it on and shake, shake shake until all the bread cubes are evenly coated.
- Add the bread cubes to your air fryer basket and fry at 300F for 10-15 minutes, stopping to shake the basket every 5 minutes. They're ready when they're crisp and slightly golden.
- Serve on top of salads or soups, and enjoy! Once they cool, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in your pantry for up to a week.
